The French Competition Authority imposed heavy fines to thirty seven modelling agencies, and also to the Synam (modelling agencies’ French Union) for colluding to fix prices, so as to distort the basis for commercial negotiations and to create obstacles to competition to the detriment of their clients.

The Synam was accused of elaborating and disseminating, between 2000 and 2010, pricing schedules in order to guide the commercial policy of the modelling agencies for photo shoots, media campaigns and fashion shows with little or no room for negotiation.

According to the report of the French Competition Authority, “the ‘official’ nature of these pricing schedules, not only covered minimum salary, but also established the total price that clients were invoiced for modelling services”. The Synam “violated the commercial autonomy of the modelling agencies regarding the setting of their own prices for the clients”.

IMG, Elite Model Management, Next Model Management, Marilyn Agency, among other prestigious modelling agencies, were accused of colluding to draw up the pricing schedules and of banning the diffusion of those schedules.
